IoT Connectivity: Bridging the gap between mobile networks and IoT managed services

Companies looking for safe, secure, and resilient IoT connectivity solutions need providers who understand their business requirements and can tailor their offering. As an IoT connectivity platform provider, Wireless Logic bridges the gap between mobile networks and IoT managed services.

The IoT continues to grow, supporting business and society through applications that increase automation, productivity, sustainability and innovation. Many sectors are crying out for advances to help them meet the challenges they face. The healthcare sector, for example, can draw on IoT remote patient monitoring solutions to help them track ongoing patient conditions and reduce strain on the under-pressure health service.

By the end of 2023, Wireless Logic had extended permanent roaming capabilities, launched the Security Framework, bolstered eSIM capabilities and strengthened its global footprint to meet business demand. In this article we look at key services that are continuing to evolve to provide customers with the best in secure connectivity solutions.

IoT security

Wireless Logic’ Security Framework is a model designed to assess IoT security against. It covers a range of technology capabilities, standards and best practices to strengthen identity and authentication policies and defend against, detect and react to cyber threats.

IoT solutions must be secured end-to-end and this starts, but doesn’t end, with design. Robust security must look at processes and people – including those of suppliers – as well as devices.

To defend, you must prevent unauthorised device, cloud infrastructure or data access. IoT SAFE (a SIM standard to authenticate and authorise IoT devices to mobile networks) plays a significant role here, as do secure communication, resilience against outages, software updates, data security policies and regulatory compliance.

To detect, you must monitor devices and network traffic to spot anything that is unusual. For this, you need analytics to deliver actionable insights. Anomalous behaviour that could indicate a problem may include a change in target URLs or data usage.

You could have the best defence and detection measures possible, but your IoT security is not complete if you can’t react swiftly and precisely in the event of any security breach. Automated countermeasures can isolate a security threat, such as that posed by a compromised device, and initiate remedial action. Additional measures in this area include reporting breaches and anomalies and applying corrective actions across systems.

‘Defend, detect and react’ together make up a 360-degree IoT security framework but it doesn’t stop there. You must also rehearse so you can swing into action quickly if you need to. You can draw on tools and techniques to help you here. These include modelling threats using ‘digital twin’ virtual representations and ‘what if?’ workshops that walk-through scenario handling.

Single SIM for global IoT deployments

Remote SIM provisioning (RSP) enables the same SIM (a single stock keeping unit – SKU) to be used in all products, regardless of where they are going. RSP-capable SIMs can switch between multiple preloaded or downloaded profiles to localise the connections.

This makes it particularly useful for multi-region and global IoT deployments, but only with a provider that also has the right roaming agreements and/or eSIM and IMSI partnerships in place.

This is because permanent roaming restrictions can be a hurdle when IoT deployments span geographies. Different regulations around the world require varying levels of localisation and data sovereignty.

Wireless Logic covers all key markets, (extended in 2023) with regulated or constrained roaming policies through extensive direct mobile network operator (MNO) roaming agreements, eSIM, iSIM and IMSI partners, a global infrastructure and on-hand expertise.

IoT connectivity in action

The IoT spans industry sectors, connecting devices that exchange monitoring, tracking, payment information and more. Growth areas include:

Electric vehicles

The electric vehicle (EV) market is growing to meet the demand of consumers and governments for sustainable transport solutions. The UK is expected to have 300,000 public EV charge points by 2030 – charge points that are essentially IoT devices that must be connected securely to exchange operational and performance, even payment, data.

Connected energy systems

We are entering a new era of intelligent, connected systems for energy generation, storage and distribution, not least because of the impact the 2G/3G network shutdown can have on rollout of smart meters and other energy applications. Robust IoT connectivity supports this transformation, connecting devices and solutions that include hydro power plants, microgrids, wind turbines, solar farms, battery storage and more. These solutions provide feedback on energy consumption, support predictive modelling and help optimise performance, among other applications.

Healthcare

Connected digital solutions have an important role to play in the healthcare sector. These can include sensors that keep care providers informed so they needn’t enter patients’ rooms unless they have to. Motion detection sensors can indicate if a patient is sat up in bed, or moving about, in which case they might need help. If that isn’t the case, not having to disturb patients helps with their sleep quality.

IoT applications enhance lives and accelerate the pace of positive economic, social and environmental change across the globe. The world of connectivity changes all the time and Wireless Logic, as an IoT connectivity platform provider, evolves with it, developing and transforming services to bring customers more powerful solutions.
